I didn't think anyone would make it out to the legendary Bitter End in the west village to see my show that night, but as the 8:00 performance approached, the room filled to capacity. It was a magical event in several respects. I was thrilled to have been able to put together such an outstanding line up of musicians who I had in mind when writing the new material for this occasion. From the first note, my songs came to life and were taken to a level higher than I could have imagined. My choice of the Bitter End as the venue was ideal: wonderful sounding room; perfect size big enough to emulate a concert setting yet small enough to allow for an intimate relationship between the performers and audience; owner Ken Gorka made me feel at home; sound engineer Ryoji Hata did an amazing job both with the live sound and recording; and to top it off, the room was packed to the walls with top notch musicians including several illustrious drummers, neighbors I grew up with, high school and college friends, teachers, co-writers, family, and unfamiliar faces who chose to be there to hear this music. This performance celebrates the 40th anniversary of Barry Miles's "White Heat" album, a pioneering recording in the history of jazz. I was fourteen years old at the time and marks the first recording I played drums on. Barry's work on that album as pianist/composer/arranger/conceptualist influenced many up and coming musicians at the time of its release who have since become established in their own right and continues to inspire today. I'm grateful Barry agreed to include the title cut from that album on this performance, and he wrote an updated arrangement that maintains the initial essence, originality, and energy of the piece while bringing it into the 21st century. For those who missed the show and for those who were there and would like to relive it, I'm happy to present this recording.
