The Piano Works project was running in parallel with the recording of Music for the Inside for much of the time, with the tracks being recorded between 1990 and 1993. Probably the most notable track on this album is Mind Walk. One of the artist's earliest published forays into cyclic minimalism, this track climbed quickly to the number 1 spot in the MP3.com minimalist charts in June 2000 ahead of many high profile composers and stayed there for some time, only to be matched a few months later by Evolution repeating the success. Even to this day, Mind Walk is held to be one of the most compelling and haunting pieces the artist has produced. Using a different compositional technique from most of the other tracks here, the aforementioned Evolution and the nearly ten minute long Emotion were both constructed using only a high level piece design, with a partially improvised performance then producing the final recording. This produces a different flavour from the other tracks that is worth comparing and contrasting with the more defined tracks such as Motion. Motion was written for an installation project. It is constructed from four 30 second segments, each of these increasing in energy. To listen to the track as originally intended, it is necessary to play four copies of the music simultaneously, from four corners of a medium size preferably square room (with minimal echo reflection if possible), each 30 seconds out of phase. Each of the four should be started in order, 30 seconds apart and then looped. The listeners are then encouraged to move at will within the space. The artists recommendation here is to avoid using digitally synced playback, as the slight phasing errors that occur from either analogue looping or non-synced digital playback add to the richness of the piece. Of course, if the phasing is too far out it just sounds a mess so the listener should use restraint! Relatively low volume levels should be used. The other tracks on Piano Works are more visual in nature, produced from specific scenes and images. However the artist is reluctant to be prescriptive in this respect as any imagery brought forth to the listener is as valid as that of the artist. The only suggestion is that is borne in mind as the other tracks are heard. Overall, Piano Works lays the foundations for many pieces that the artist produced over the following twenty years, with influences being heard in the artists albums to this day.
