简介
BY DAVID MALACHOWSKI Reviewer Van Muller is a new rock singer with country and retro roots, so it makes perfect sense that she’s from that hotbed of that genre — Sao Paulo, Brazil. But you’d never know it, as Muller’s music cruises down Route 66 with the top down sounding like classic American rock with a tinge of Nashville, sounding more American than the natives. Produced by bassist Ken Rich, who brought in heavy hitters like Ben Butler (guitar) Ethan Eubanks (drums) and Time Ries (saxophone), “Find Yourself Here” is quite powerful. After picking up this CD at the post office, I popped it in while taking route 212 home, and the expansive strains of “Take A Ride” couldn’t have suited the drive more perfectly with it’s majestic sound, stocked with slinky slide guitar and Muller’s soaring voice. Covering a Lennon/McCartney song can be a challenge, but Muller makes it her own, with a yearning delivery and a sexy growl as she empathically shouts “baby!” with verve. The expansive “In the Dark” has an Asbury Park vibe, while “If This Is Goodbye” leans more towards Music City, albeit in a Kim Richey kind of way. Nasty guitars bring on “More Than A Show” as Muller’s sultry voice serpentines around a leaving song. Muller’s voice is an exquisite instrument, at times spectacular, other times subtle and emotive, always convincing and real. Her songwriting is first rate too, so there’s a lot to like. Maybe it takes someone from far away to truly appreciate straight ahead rockin‘ American music that we take for granted.
