On "Blue Light Special" whimsical singer-songwriter Emiy Kaitz deals with carpenter bees, ticks and dogs, as well as offering the suggestion that we attack our enemies with banjo music rather than bombs. Speaking of banjos, they are prominently featured on this CD, from Drew Pierce on "If The World Is Warming, Why Are You So Cold?" and "Ernie Boudreax's Doggie Dude Ranch" to Janet Davis on "My Grandma's Tattoo" (Janet wrote the musical portion of that song by the way, Emily having added words after the fact) and finally Kelly Mulhollan of Still on the Hill on "Banjos Not Bombs." Let's see, are there any banjo players I forgot? Well, Fred Bogert plays the "banjolin" on "Blue Light Special," the title song which he produced. There's also some nice pedal steel from the ubiquitous Drifty Texarkana on "You're Drivin' Me To Drink," a drinking song for people who don't drink co-written by the brilliant Melinda Brooks of Cedar Park, Texas. Drifty also plays on "A Cupful of Lonely," a co-write with the talented poet Rebecca Wood. Jack Williams, guitarist extraordinaire, plays with Emily on "O.D. On Your Love," a song she wrote back in the 1970s when she actually used to take recreational drugs. The CD concludes with Emily on piano and a chorus of wine drinkers from "The Ozark Meritage Guild," the wine tasting group she is fortunate enough to be a member of in Fayetteville, Arkansas. (Wine is currently Emily's drug of choice.) You can actually hear them clinking glasses as they join in the chorus of their theme song, which Emily wrote for them.
