简介

Mark Flugge Remembered is a celebration of Mark's music and playful, loving, creative spirit. This collection is a gift to all who knew and loved him and his music; it features audience favorites as well as some lesser-known compositions he had yet to release on a recording. Mark wrote, “I hope people/musicians will play some of the music I’ve written. They’re my musical children.” Mark Flugge Remembered is intended to supplement his compositions on his three other CDs, February’s Promise (2002), Familiarity (2003), and In Love, In Blue (2007), as well as his works on Waltz into Madness (2012). His musical influences included Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Clare Fischer, Thelonious Monk, Keith Jarrett, Dave Frishberg, ragtime and stride piano, the American Songbook, Bach, and Mozart. He specialized in solo jazz piano and chamber jazz, writing and arranging many pieces that included flute. All proceeds from the sale of Mark Flugge Remembered go to the Mark Flugge Memorial Fund. Renowned jazz piano virtuoso, composer, educator, and bandleader Mark Flugge passed away suddenly on May 11, 2014 in Columbus after battling a debilitating hearing affliction for nearly two years. He was a cherished friend and mentor to countless musicians in the Central Ohio area and around the world. At the time of his passing, Flugge taught at Capital University and The Ohio State University (where he had earned a Bachelor’s in Jazz Composition), and formerly served on the faculty at the Eastman School of Music (where he had earned a Master’s in Jazz Piano Performance). Mark conducted clinics throughout the U.S. and Germany on jazz improvisation, jazz piano, and the music of Duke Ellington. As a soloist, he performed “Rhapsody in Blue” twice with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, as well as with the Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra, the Capital/Bexley Orchestra, and the Westerville Symphony. Founder of the Chamber Jazz Series at the Columbus Music Hall in 2006, Flugge continued to program, produce, and perform this series at the Columbus Museum of Art to the end. The Mark Flugge Trio was the house rhythm section for the Chamber Jazz Series. The combo also played every Friday night at the Hyde Park steakhouse, where they were a fixture from 2000-2014; "one of the best trio rooms in the country" was the consensus of jazz lovers. In addition to his all-consuming love for music, Mark was a master Scrabble player, avid Reds fan, and baseball card collector; sharing these hobbies with many dear friends brought his last two years much solace. Mark is deeply missed by all who knew him; his fondest wish was that his music would live on. Today his musical influence continues to have an impact through his compositions, recordings, students, and colleagues. This recording is produced by the non-profit Mark Flugge Memorial Fund, whose purpose is to further Mark’s musical and educational legacy. Major goals include the dissemination of Mark’s recordings and sheet music, the establishment of the Capital University Mark Flugge Jazz Award, the performance of Mark’s compositions and their arrangements in the widest possible variety of ensembles and venues, and the Annual Mark Flugge Memorial Concert at Capital University. The Mark Flugge Memorial Fund gratefully acknowledges gifts from a multitude of donors to make these goals possible, including support from The Ohio State University for the production of Mark Flugge Remembered, and Capital University for sponsorship of the Annual Mark Flugge Memorial Concert. - Lisa Jelle, Director of the Mark Flugge Memorial Fund
