Celebrating 15 years on his own Sweetspot label, Woke Up in Memphis is singer/songwriter/cornetist Al Basile's tenth solo CD, collecting fourteen of Al's new songs inspired by classic 60s Memphis musical styles: soul, R&B, and gospel. Produced like all his other CDs by lifelong friend and musical collaborator Duke Robillard, it builds on the sound of his last record At Home Next Door (12 on the Living Blues airplay chart in its month of release, and earning Al's third nomination for a Blues Music Award) with Duke and his band along with Roomful of Blues alumni horns backing him up. It mixes secular lyrics with the first of Al's gospel songs to appear on one of his releases, a duet with special guest Sista Monica Parker.
