简介
Nick Grinder is a trombonist, composer, and educator based in New York City, and is one of the most versatile young musicians on the scene today. Nick has an active professional background in salsa, orchestral music, and pop, but has always strived to push the boundaries in the jazz and improvised music world with his performance and compositions. Hailed by Slide Hampton as “an important future voice in jazz trombone” and “the best blend of saxophone-like technique with the expressive nuances of the trombone” by Alan Ferber, Nick Grinder began playing professionally at age 15 in the Bay Area, California, in various clubs and bars on the weekends. While he was involved in many regional young people’s “All-Star” bands, his greatest experience came from playing weekly gigs restaurants and clubs with his peers, where the band could stretch and learn together. From 2007-2011, Nick studied on scholarship at Cal State Northridge, under the tutelage of trombonist Bob McChesney and master educator Gary Pratt, and in 2011 he moved to New York City, receiving an adjunct faculty position at NYU during his pursuit of a master’s degree. He has studied with Elliot Mason, Michael Dease, Alan Ferber, and Ralph Alessi since his time in New York, and his performance and recording credits include Chris Potter, Marcus Printup, NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Owens, Ulysses Owens, John Riley, Ralph Alessi, Mark Ferber, Deltron 3030, Dee Snider, and many others. "10 Minutes" represents Nick's musical journey up until this point. The album features all of his original compositions, which are different enough to not make the listening monotonous, but have a common thread that showcases the composer's voice. It was recorded in March of 2013, and features Charlotte Greve on alto saxophone, Jason Burger on drums, Manuel Schmiedel on piano, and Sam Anning on bass. It was recorded March of 2013 at Dolan Studios in New York City and engineered by Tyler McDiarmid. It was mixed by Paul Wickliffe at Skyline Productions.
