After a run of shows in 2013 and building a solid live foundation as a new band in Los Angeles, GUIDES were poised to release their first EP late in the year. Wait, no. Throw them away. All of them? Yes. The group scrapped not only the songs, but the whole chapter and began anew. Holing up in the studio for the winter they found themselves on a new path, a rich one, paved in gold; or at least shiny magnetic oxide on analog tape. This wasn’t at all about money though, but rather…worth. Emerging as a three-piece, rejuvenated yet other-worldly, GUIDES debut 3-song 7” seems to give the listener just a taste of what’s to come. Musical abstractions as sonic foundations. Wall of guitar blasts meet hazy melodies. Stripped down riffs sounding simultaneously zoned-out yet full of intention. Esoteric? Maybe, but as so many groups throughout history whose seemingly ‘difficult’ music has been embraced by the masses, this is a musical cloud worth reaching. Maybe it was their ‘Guru Sessions’, where each recording session was hosted by a different ‘Guru presence’? Maybe it was the exit of their 4th member?
