Most up and coming artists don’t move into a nursing home to begin their music career but that is just what 81 year old William 'Bill' Long has done. His unlikely new album, “Unlocked and Loaded” was even recorded in a Signature HealthCARE facility at Bordeaux. Long completed his album in January of this year despite suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and never publicly performing until becoming a resident of the nursing home. He has been playing the harmonica since he was just a boy after requesting a guitar that his father denied him. “A guitar player won’t work,” his Daddy told him, so he ordered a harmonica instead because he could hide that from him. Long hid his talent for many years but began to gain notoriety playing for residents in the facility. He then entered and won the regional talent show and was honored in the Signature’s Hall of Fame. Long’s daughter Mary Elizabeth Long-Simpson has been his manager and biggest fan all along the way. She began working therapeutically with the Music and Memory program for her father and has used music to help sustain his cognition and health. She was also a part of the interdisciplinary team that got the facility certified for Music and Memory in 2016 as a volunteer. Bill’s story and journey is an inspiration to all. We celebrate Bill Long’s first album of country and gospel standards and all proceeds from the release go to non-profit Music and Memory.
