简介

In 1957, NBC presented a television broadcast of the classic fairy tale, "Pinocchio," starring Mickey Rooney, and an impressive lineup of stars. The program was never aired again, but Masterworks Broadway continues it commitment to opening its vaults of obscure recordings to the public, and is now releasing the digital premiere of this musical. Mickey Rooney (1920-2014) spent nine decades on the stage and screen. From success as a child star through his classic Andy Hardy films, Rooney's unique look found an appealing niche with families throughout his life. On "Pinocchio," Rooney acts as narrator, as well as several of the voices, including the title character. His narration is endearing, though his Pinocchio impression takes some getting used to, as his voice on this recording almost comes across as scary, though without the benefit of any visual support. However, as "Pinocchio" progresses through the story of the wooden boy who learns to "Listen to Your Heart," and becomes human, Rooney's personification softens, and we gain some affection for the boy by the end. A concise recording at 45 minutes, this recording features some notable talent from the day, including Stubby Kaye (Nicely-Nicely in the movie version of "Guys and Dolls") and the lovely voice of Fran Allison (from the old television program, "Kukla, Fran and Ollie"). Kaye (as the Town Crier) and Allison (as the Blue-haired Fairy Queen), along with Jerry Colonna (as the Ringmaster) and Martyn Green, join Rooney in performing musical numbers by Alec Wilder and William Engvick. There aren't many melodies to grasp on to on this short offering, but Green's rendition of "The Fox's Pitch," is one of the musical highlights. Though young listeners certainly won't recognize any of the voices, the "Pinocchio" story is still timeless, and this recording can certainly provide a bonding experience across generations.
