Xanthe Alexis has achieved a mighty sound in her new solo work, "Time of War," by keeping her sound engineering unadorned and direct, each track aiming straight for the listener's most vulnerable points. Her songwriting has never been more frank, and the wail she has perfected in years as one half of Hopeful Heroines comes through with stark clarity, as does the intrepid guitar playing. Some songs, like the title cut and "White Dove," have been concert favorites, though they receive diligent and beautiful re-workings here. Others are brand-new surprises, as startling for lyrical twists as for the songs' unfamiliarity. The album's title might suggest a little topicality, or maybe a little unfortunate timelessness - as the old quote says, "You might not be interested in war, but war is interested in you."
