Starting Small, Staying Small is a group of songs gleaned from years of journal entries. I never planned for people to hear these songs, they were just a processing tool for me. Therefore almost no two songs are in the same style. Their only common denominator is my personal experience. And since many people's experiences tend to flow along similar themes; mistakes, loss, faith, joy, wonder…Almost anyone will find something on this album to connect with. I played a couple tunes for my friend Greg Wollan, and soon he was busy helping me record this album in his basement studio. It took a very long time to record, and an even longer time for me to have it duplicated, because I drug my feet, we did this in our spare time, and two babies joined my family in the middle of it. (Mostly I drug my feet.) The process took about three years. Recording was an eye opening experience. Hearing other people’s contributions to each tune brought them to life for me again and somehow made them pop from mono to stereo in my mind. During most recording sessions my face ached from smiling. This is where the beauty of community has physical animation: Everyone sharing their unique style and talent, weaving it into the songs with beautiful results. I am pleased. Long after the project was recorded and ready to duplicate, I played a couple of the tunes for some ladies, and much to my surprise they were laughing, crying, and asking me if they could plan my CD release party. I think their emotional reaction gave me the lynch pin I needed to hook my wagon up and get going with duplication. Enjoy!
