简介
If you happen to be having a conversation about music in Guyana, you are guaranteed of two things. You will definitely hear the name Samuel Medas, and if you further enquire, you will learn that at a young age of 26, this young man has become an enigma that is surpassing every musical limitation, and making headlines not just for his country, but for the Kingdom. To many of his ever increasing fans, Muziq Medas as he is often called, is more than just that unlikely, skinny, black boy with the amazing voice. To them he is role model, brother, friend, comedian, inspiration; just the kind of Christian artist whose music and life you can relate to on so many levels. And when we say he is unlikely, we mean it. If you heard his music having never known of him, and then saw him in person, you would have a hard time matching the two. His humility speaks loudly. You will pass him straight in the streets, or mistake him for just another guy at a concert… that is until he takes the microphone or sits behind the keys. When that happens, you’re in for a lot. He is a modern day psalmist, and prophet that will not only lead you into the presence of God, but will accurately pull the word of the Lord from heavenly realms and release it spontaneously through music. Meet Samuel Rhema Medas: Gospel Recording Artiste, Owner of The Comfort Zone Ent. Record Label, Musician, Composer, writer, and a few other hats that all fit on the head of this country kid. Born December 4th, 1988, Samuel is the eldest of four boys all belonging to Charles and Peggy Medas, two very humble people who pastor the Lighthouse Wesleyan Church. Yes, he’s a PK (that’s Preacher’s Kid for you who’re now coming to grips with the hipness of abbreviations LOL). From the day of his birth, anyone around him could tell that he was marked to do great things for the Kingdom. Doctors told his parents that he was born with a hole in his heart, days later they were dumbfounded – yes you guessed it, God healed him. Then along came the passion for music. He would always say that he fell in love with music before he knew, and fell in love with Jesus. At age 5 he was already learning to play the keyboard, a gift that can only be accredited to the Holy Spirit. Whenever you missed him, he’d be up in the jamoon tree in the back yard just soaking in the music played in his neighbourhood. But as always, the path of a Christian is always a narrow one to walk and as he grew he became torn between the life that was expected of him from his parents and church family, and the carefree life of his peers. By then he was relatively known for his musical gifting and the girls were already magnetized. He began to hate church and the narrow walk of a Christian, and worse, the fishbowl life of a preacher’s kid. But in one of his most inspiring songs “Where Would I Be?” Sammy opens up and talks about an accident in 2004 when a huge racing motorcycle slammed him into someone’s concrete fence. Walking away unharmed, from such an accident that was at the very least supposed to cause serious injury to an 80lb child, his life was forever changed. That night was the first time he heard the literal voice of God and realized that the act of him being birthed into the earth was no mistake at all, and that the hand of the Lord was on his life. “It wasn’t an overnight change”, the Psalmist says while laughing, “it was gradual cause God had to ring my ears several times after that for me to come start obeying… and time and time again he still has to do it”. In 2004, Samuel and his long time cousin and partner in music Allan Petty formed Cross Carriers and in 2008, recorded their first single called “Praise You” which was a major achievement by any measurement for young country boys. Two years later, with the inclusion of Rochelle Maxius, the trio released their debut 8-track album called RePresent Him. It spread fast and even landed them in Jamaica to perform at the Elasha Spring Fest. By then Samuel had already been to three nations because of his music, but was encouraged by renowned Guyanese recording artiste Sean Sobers to take music to another level by releasing a solo album. And it was Samuel’s decision to take that little piece of advice that has caused the calling and anointing on his life to explode. In November of 2012 he released his first solo album “Heart to Heart”. Within a year he had already gone to perform in the U.S.A and British Territories multiple times. People began to address him by titles like Psalmist and Prophet, neither of which he was looking for or comfortable with. But the grace on his life was evident. He impacts young people in unexplainable ways. He impacts grown folks just the same and his humility has, and continues to build bridges for him to fly to nations of which he has never dreamt he would see. Then in May of 2014, when we thought it couldn’t get any better, the psalmist dropped a project on us all that is still causing heads to turn towards Guyana. It is called “This Peculiar Journey” – his sophomore album that has had social media buzzing ever since. The sound is fresh and the anointing is so heavy that people are cautioning him to stay in that secret place that he’s pulling inspiration from. The whole 12-track project is a work of art but the two hit-home songs on the album are “On This Road Alone” and “In My Day” As of today, he as stood on stages with some of the Caribbean and North America’s premier voices in Gospel music like CeCe Winans, Jermaine Edwards, Sherwin Gardner, Dj Nicholas, Israel Houghton, Positive, and is has assisted many of the young talented Gospel Artistes emerging from Guyana. Face it… the kid’s going higher and higher and the Lord is with him (that’s not cliché either). Get his music on iTunes, Google Play, AmazonMP3, and listen for yourself. Samuel Medas is the perfect example of how God can and will take a seemingly insignificant, surrendered life, and make a thing of beauty out of it.
