If Memphis, Tennessee, was the city where rock’n’roll began with Elvis Presley, then Philadelphia was, for a few short years, its successor at the music’s epicentre. Before the baton passed to Liverpool in 1963 with the Beatles’ emergence and the British Invasion that followed, Philly held sway, producing a line of teen idols that swept the world. The shop window for the ‘product’ was Dick Clark’s Bandstand TV show, and four labels – Cameo, Chancellor, Swan and Jamie – were the means by which those idols’ recordings reached the shops. Cameo, founded in 1956 by Bernie Lowe, was first off the blocks with Charlie Gracie, but it was Chancellor, formed early in 1957, that arguably had greater impact.
