简介
Danny Smith was born August 6, 1987, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Growing up in the working class neighborhood of Somerville, he made known early on that he would express himself at will and in his own light. Supplying the daily after-school freestyle circles with instrumentals, Danny came to realize that rapping was both exciting and therapeutic; this cultivated an ambitious desire to make himself known with a medley of abstract content, flawless flow, and urban grit. It was at this time that his musical idols assigned him the emcee name Supraliminal, a word meaning “at or above the threshold of consciousness”. In November of 2003, Supra was elected to perform at Tufts University’s hip-hop festival alongside Talib Kweli and Akrobatik. That night’s feeling on stage and roar of applause gave Supra a rush he could not ever forget; when he found the drive and comfort in pursuing hip-hop as a career. This was even the subject of his college essay that aided his acceptance into Columbia University, where he graduated in 2009 with a major in economics and psychology. Supraliminal’s first two albums, Methods of Expression Volume 1 (2004) & Volume Two (2006), featured several of his own beats, intelligently poetic and complex lyrics, and were welcomed around the Boston area as different, gritty and meaningful. By this time there had amassed a solid fanbase – both diverse and dedicated – who recognized Supraliminal’s artistic potential, and in 2008 he released Vol. Three: Most Likely to be Famous, named after the superlative he was awarded in high school. It was in Supra’s college years – and not surprisingly so as an academic enthusiast – when he began to incorporate more theoretical and philosophical themes into his sharp, urban flows. Here birthed the unique style which now today defines Supraliminal as a writer and rapper, and has landed him on tracks and live performances with Raekwon, Tragedy Khadafi, Sammy Adams, Martin Luther of the Roots, Dean Swift, Charmingly Ghetto, and many other up-and-coming musical acts. The following several years after graduating proved a bit more turbulent for Supra, returning home in a tough economy and lacking firm direction. The strong local problems of substance abuse, violence, opposition of conventional culture, mental instability, family issues and social discord took a toll on Danny as well as many of his close friends. However being more fully immersed in these matters though, Supra was also more comfortable to articulate them, and do so from various perspectives and with an open mind. During this time, Buddhist practices had also become a very important influence on Danny’s vision, helping him to concentrate strength of mind into a constructive commentary of his own. This literal maturity is prominent on his 2011 mixtape Mind/Matter and even more so with his fifth project, “Full Script”, dense with deep lyrics, professional production, and a nearly-immaculate flow. He was recently named as one of the “Top Ten Boston Rappers” by a renowned local blog and continues to develop relationships with many of the most talented and driven individuals in the underground hip-hop scene.
