简介

Recorded in 2011 at the Esplanade Concert Hall, Singapore, this recording features an extraordinary collaboration between Singaporean musicians. Gabriel was 16 and a student in the Yehudi Menuhin School (UK) when he performed the concerto in June 2011. This mirrors a legendary recording of the same concerto in 1932, the 16 year old Menuhin with the conductor himself conducting the work. This is also the first recording of the work made by Singaporean Musicians, and two recipients of the HSBC Youth Excellence Award – Gabriel in 2006, and the Orchestra of the Music Makers in 2009. Conductor Chan Tze Law has a unique connection to the piece too - He learnt the concerto whilst still a violin student in the Royal College of Music, London under the tutelage of Hugh Bean, Concertmaster of the Philharmonia Orchestra and BBC Symphony Orchestra, who himself was taught the piece by Albert Sammons, who made the first ever recording of the Elgar Concerto in 1929, and it is estimated that he played the concerto over a hundred times in his career. Elgar's hyper-romantic concerto contains an immensely difficult part for the soloist, combining virtuosic fireworks with beautifully emotive music. The orchestra also plays a significant role in this concerto, which could be likened to a symphony with a violin solo.
