The Mark Of Rizo points to a jazz influence intermingled with the simplicity of native Latin dances. It produces a distinctive, exhilarating harmony in such familiar dances as the rumba, tango and bolero and inserts a pulsating freshness in the merengue and cha cha. Marco’s super-charged piano precision is artfully assisted by the reeds, trombones, trumpets and a host of authentic Latin instruments, including guiro, conga, claves and bongos. Two novel renditions even use an organ in effective support to the orchestra. Marco Rizo was born in Cuba, but has lived in the United States since 1940. As arranger for the Desi Arnaz Orchestra and the ’I Love Lucy’ television show, and a bandleader in his own right, he has continually fused south-of-the-border rhythms with modern Norte Americano musical styles. His ten arrangements on this album display the ingenious brand of musical artistry that is The Mark Of Rizo.
