This album is a landmark leap over last year's Leave Ruin, eschewing that records more standard altcountry-isms for something grander, more challenging, and much more unique. It swings from minimalist folk to stoner metal to Neil Young-ed out guitar wailing to droning chants. Sterling and Last to Swim are the most immediate, but the whole thing is spectacular. Give it a few spins, soak it in - there's a rich mythology living underneath its surface that a cursory listen will miss.
