Unsurprisingly, The Thicket trades many of the abstract instrumental qualities of Grubbs' other work for an almost singer/songwriter feel -- its songs are, at the core, rustic, country-tinged constructions of acoustic guitar, with a much stronger vocal presence than before. With Grubbs' always-keen sense of interesting arrangements and instrumentation, The Thicket stands as a polished and fully realized example of this vein of Grubb's songwriting.
