And There Stand Empires began in Tulsa Oklahoma as a collaboration between bassists Daniel Sutliff and James Plumlee sometime in 2000/2001. Soon after Julia Hangs was added on piano and, after a series of different drummers, Hank Hanewinkel joined on drums.

Over the last ten years the music has grown from being at times a chaotic, long-form, improvisatory tangle of instruments, to a very orchestrated and structure based music incorporating vibraphone/bells/strings and melodicas, that still has moments of chaos and disorder.

Their new release is densely orchestrated instrumental music, at times slow and melodic and at other times heavy, distorted and dark. Lots of different instruments and layers comprise the songs. Like the soundtrack to a non-existent Stanley Kubrick film. A convergence of modern jazz/hardcore/modern classical. Brutal and Joyful.
