I was inspired to write this song by Bob Marley's song War. In that song Bob took a speech made by Haile Selassie and turned it into a song. In this song Old Shackles, I have a taken a speech made by my father who was a politician from Malawi, Africa and turned it into a song. My father made this speech around the time of independence. He wanted people in his country not just to hear about freedom but feel it from the changes made to the society. It seems that many years later the common people are still hoping to feel freedom.
