Jed Brewer is a Chicago-based songwriter, producer, and filmmaker. He leads music for a church of ex-convicts and recovering drug addicts. Here’s what he says about his new album, God Quit: This is an album about suffering. Someone has asked, "Where is God when it hurts?" That's a great question. It's also an old question. Thousands of years ago, Peter, one of Jesus' disciples, wrote this: "Friends, when life gets really difficult, don't jump to the conclusion that God isn't on the job. Instead, be glad that you are in the very thick of what Christ experienced. This is a spiritual refining process, with glory just around the corner. " 1 Peter 4:12 (The Message) For me, when things are well and truly awful, the conclusion that God has quit feels very natural. And to believe the contrary - that there is more to the story - is a decision that can only come through faith in the unseen and the not-yet. Very unnatural. But if this is, in fact, a "spiritual refining process", what does that look like? How does it work? What does it mean? The songs on this album represent my own experience of looking for - and perhaps finding - answers to those questions.
