The first movement of El Toro was sketched out in 1997 and complete in its current form by the year 2016, the year the work was recorded. There was no date on the second movement. As with most of his music it’s there for however long it takes to notate, then it’s on to the next. It was tucked in with the other pages. The third movement was dated 2003. It needed repairs and as is often the case the repairs can take longer than the initial outpouring. El Toro turned out to be a beast to record. The first and third movements presented all sorts of pianistic challenges. Tendonitis which lingers still was the result of all the machine-gun fortissimo-marcato phrases in the first movement and of the three or four hundred measures of chord work in the third as well. Conversations, Cello and Piano is from the composer’s Whidbey Island period and recorded in 2002 or perhaps earlier. It was recently recovered from a drive that contained some of BR Pearson’s first digital recordings (ADAT) that had died. Glyph, the manufacturer, was kind enough to resurrect much of the data and put it on a new drive. We hope you like it!
