简介
Tony Mangra was born in Albouystown, Guyana but grew up in the village of Port Mourant on the Courentyne. He left Guyana in 1982, migrating to the USA. He joined the US Army in 1983 and is currently still serving. Guyana is located in South America but culturally it is a part of the West Indies. Tony grew up in the countryside of Guyana listening to music from India, rock steady (what has now evolved to what the world knows as reggae), calypso and Guyanese folk music. Some of his influences are Bob Marley, The Tradewinds and The Mighty Sparrow to name a few. Tony migrated to the United States in October of 1982 and brought with him a life long dream of singing and recording music. He is a songwriter and plays the guitar. His songs range from love ballads to songs about his roots. Because of his early influences, his music is melodic with a rich island flavor. He recorded his first CD, Simple Plan, in Kingston, Jamaica in 1991. This CD has received airplay in Guyana, USA, Asia and Europe. He recorded Knocking On Heaven's Door, his second CD, in Mililani, Hawaii. This CD has also received air play in Hawaii, Continental USA (smooth jazz, AC, and college stations). His version of Knocking On Heavens Door was selected for a compilation CD on Neos Productions record label in Hawaii. His third CD, Long Long Time, was recorded at Edit Point Recording studio in San Antonio, TX. This CD was recorded and mixed by Donnie Meals. Donnie is well known for his engineering and producing skills. This CD has ten great songs ranging from the soothing ballad, In My Own Way, festive Long Long Time and Keep The Rhythm Going to some cool reggae vibes such as Giving It All and Rastaman. His CD, Loverman is still very tropical but it is much more upbeat and danceable. On this CD he has utilized the tenor sax, something very different from his previous work. It was a brilliant move. The sax player is outstanding and fans would really get into the music. Loverman was self-released on the college radio format in the US and Canada in June of 2002 and has made it to #28 on the CMJ World Music Chart. His latest CD, Feeling Good is a compilation of previous work with the addition of one new song, "Feeling Good".
