简介
Jamie Walker and Steve Sadler Jamie and Steve spend much or their time playing in bands; Jamie has fronted the Swinging Steaks for the last couple of decades as well as playing guitar and mandolin with various acts while Steve has been playing and recording as a sideman, after fronting his own groups back in the 70's and 80's, with any number of groups and/or solo artists on various stringed instruments. For the last decade or so Steve has also been proud to be an 'auxiliary' member of the Swinging Steaks and of the Steak's various spin-off conglomerations. Because they also perform as an acoustic duo and sometimes play the same material electrically with a rhythm section, Steve and Jamie decided it was way past time to record some of this repertoire for posterity, especially after lying at all of their appearances that they were indeed 'working on' something that could be purchased! Thus "Better Late. . ." finally came about. The idea was that they should cut the stuff 'live' at Steve's studio, 'Reno World', which is the project studio at his house. With that in mind recording commenced. Abandoning the original plan of cutting it 'live in the room' just like a show for various reasons, technical and mental, it finally was decided they would at least play the instruments at the same time and then sing together at the same time when harmonizing. Hopefully this would maintain a better feel and preserve what little dignity they cling to. And they did manage to do this in all but a couple instances. They also decided to resist the urge to overdub more instruments than they could play at one time, and this was adhered to with only one exception. Dangerously close to actually completing recording the project, Jamie came up with the idea of doing some tunes with a bass play and a drummer and Steve agreed. So they adjourned to Andy Plaisted's 'Electric Andyland' facility, along with bassist extraordinaire Clayton Young, for two songs. They then returned to Steve's place and played their instruments and sang, keeping the 'both at once' approach going, and completed the recording of the project. Having successfully come this far, the tracks were then sent to the other coast to Mr. Todd Winmill, a former Steaks and everyone else's sound mixer in the Boston area, who recently moved to LA to mix the musical guests on the Conan O'Brian TV show. Todd graciously agreed to make them into something listenable and sent back the music that comprises "Better Late . . .". Jamie and Steve are quite pleased with the final results!
