简介
We are pleased to announce the release of Victor Kunonga’s fourth album, Kwedu. Kunonga is a much-esteemed artist who has made a name for himself as someone whose music moves Zimbabweans far and wide. After three commercially successful albums, we are proud to introduce the public to Victor’s fourth effort, which is a ground-breaking turn on the music fans and reviewers have come to know and love. Victor Kunonga is well-known as one of Zimbabwe’s top Afro-beat musicians. He stands alone as someone who has built an intimate following of fans who are familiar with all the songs of his previously released albums. Kunonga has built an enviable career and Kwedu is released at a time in his life when he as an artist has begun to explore the depths of his music. Victor’s sound has not necessarily changed, but its finding its roots and finding its grounding. Reflecting on the album Kunonga says, “This album is more like a piece of art where I was allowed to express my ideas the best way possible. I also allowed the guys that I work with to bring the best out of themselves. You notice the contribution of each and every one on each instrument they are playing and it is so intens!. I think it’s an album that best describes who I am. It’s a predominantly guitar album -the way the music is expressed is by inter-weaving this guitar carpet. It’s sitting on a mesh with highlights that are bouncing off that mesh. So artistically, to me it’s the most creative of all of my albums. What gives me that satisfaction was the fact that I had absolute control of the album from inception right up to the mixing stage and so it’s an album that is very close to my heart.” The twelve-track album definitively describes Victor Kunonga the man and is very personal. It shows his music fans who he really is. Uniquely, Kwedu incorporates a lot of mbira, which adds a different dimension to the album. Most of the songs here branch off or are inspired by the mbira, others incorporate the mbira sound itself to a higher degree than before. Ultimately what comes through is a deeper exploration of the music people have come to expect from the seasoned artist. Kunonga and his band Peace have been performing on Harare’s music scene since 2004 and have built up an exciting chemistry, that yields music that people find difficult to classify. Kunonga describes it best as six people sitting down and having a conversation with their instruments and developing an exciting synergy.
