简介
When Mathieu Weggeman published his poetry collection "Een Vilein Gebied" (A Treacherous Area) in 2015, he asked Robert Weirauch to set some of the poems to music. These songs, performed by the Simurg Ensemble, then were published on a bonus CD along with the book. Although initially a classical ensemble, Simurg here made a radical shift towards chamber pop and cabaret, with cellist Stijn Saveniers taking up additional vocal duties. On their latest offering "Wintercircus" (again with poetry by Weggeman and music by Weirauch), with The Beatles' White Album as a shining example, the quartet boldly develops their new sound, adding a vast array of instruments ranging from viola da gamba and cembalo to synthesizers, theremin, guitars and drums to create a dazzlingly multi-faceted album, where virtually every song has its own sound and mood, ranging from whimsical to melancholy. All instruments, some 40 in total, were played by the quartet themselves.
