简介
Dig It! The first time I heard Truly Lover Trio they only performed Roy Orbison cover songs. Marcel knocked me out with a voice fully informed with knowledge of Roy’s phrasing and nuance, but he never for a moment simply copied or impersonated – he was the real thing. But Truly Lover Trio is not a cover band. Far from it, as with Dig It, nearly all their songs are written and sung by Marcel. He is an artist and a cool cat, not a copycat. That special gift is what I hear on every track of Dig It, an album that at one and the same time recalls the early history of rock and roll while sounding fresh as today with Marcel’s distinct vocal stylings. As a trio they remind of me a fundamental fact of rock and roll — less is frequently more. Truly Lover Trio’s pared down reinterpretation of Roy Orbison’s “Breaking Up is Breaking My Heart” makes me wish that Roy, one of the greatest rock and roll singers, had recorded and performed it in this manner, with less elaborate production and fewer instruments. Truly Lover Trio shows time and again that some of the best rock and roll comes from just a singer with a beautiful voice and a few musicians who dig it.
