In 2007 I stumbled upon the beautiful three song debut of The Pirate Ship Quintet. The dynamic Postrock was so rich of energy and melody that you begged for more. Five years later there is finally the full length album Rope for No-Hopers. One song for every year but I can tell you it’s worth the wait. In the first song ‘You’re Next’ the English collective is doing the same as before; beautiful arranged postrock with string instruments (even a guy from the National Orchestra of Wales is in the band) are filling the room. Later in ‘Horse Manifesto’ anxious screaming vocals are woven into the subtle music. Also the music is getting heavier and heavier and going towards a climax at the end of the song. The screaming makes it very intense. It gives The Pirate Ship Quintet a different face. The new path is successful and it’s always good when a band is following new directions. In ‘Dennis Many Times’ the speed is going down and dreaming away on the sound of the classical instruments is the best what you can do. Half-way you wake up by the fast ‘n heavy riff and again vocals before the tempo is going down. The end is an eruption of fast drumming combined with the string arrangements. On this song but also on ‘That Girl I Used to Live in’ and the last one ‘Doldrums’ The Pirate Ship Quintet can be described as the screamo version of Godspeed! You Black Emperor. The heavy parts are flowing naturally into the subtle postrock tones and classical arrangements. With all these stuff written about the music the title ‘Rope for No-Hopers’ is fascinating me, do they point at the negative people or do they point out the realistic people that typically are not the type of hoping on something in life? The album is giving me positive energy so I guess they meant the last group. Decide for yourself when you are listening to this beautiful album.
