John's talent, versatility and experience composing, recording, editing and mixing music for the film/tv and music industry is clearly evident in "Moods of the Common Man" by being dramatically somber and meditative to wildly moving, energetic and exciting. ******************************************************************** AMAZON REVIEWS; 5.0 out of 5 stars - By Jack Cousineau - See all my reviews This is beautiful music, May 31, 2008 What do you do if you are a composer and hiring a symphony orchestra to record your pieces is a bit out of reach? John McGrath has an answer; it's his recording "Moods of the Common Man". Your reviewer is a player of an acoustic instrument who is not a fan of synthesizers. And yet I like this music. McGrath must be writing for real instruments and obviously has tried hard to find the highest quality sounds to substitute for them. And so in this recording he succeeds in conveying a real sense of the depth, power, sophistication, and beauty of his musical imagination. That imagination seems to relish a tonal/modal approach with enough tasteful dissonance to keep us moderns in touch with our 20th century roots. "Moods of the Common Man", the first track, is rich, passionate, and modestly titled. The next two, "Morning Colours" and "Rita's Midday Creek" are sure to please listeners who meditate with music. "Manic Expressions" is the keyboard piece in this set. This is mania as pure energy and a one movement concert piece for piano and orchestra. "2am and on till Dawn" begins in an electronic impressionistic way, moves on to lush orchestral textures, and then to folksy modalism with tasty drum kit support, before a simple, elegant ending. Do get this recording. The music is wonderful and the listening experience is sublime. McGrath creates a profound accoustic space in this recording. It must be that he knows a lot about recording and producing, as well as composing. Initial post: Jul 2, 2008 8:50 PM PDT internet buying junkie says: Thank you! You put my feelings into words! Great review! Moods of the Commom Man, June 30, 2008 By M. Buenaventura (OC, CA) 1 of 3 9/6/08 6:39 PM This is a great collection of music creation .... wonderful, pleasant and relaxing music, McGrath is a genius! Review for An Uncommon Album, June 1, 2008 By H. Laird (Kansas City, MO) - See all my reviews Listening to this CD is an exceptional experience. McGrath's background in motion picture sound is very apparent in the broad and cinematic feel of the compositions. And the lush, full orchestration sounds so real that it is almost unbelievable that it is all synthesized. Listening to this album is like watching a little movie in your head - the old fashioned way - with your imagination. Bravo for Moods of the Common Man and the not-so-common chops of the composer! 5.0 out of 5 stars This is a must for every fine music collection., May 19, 2008 By internet buying junkie (Long Beach, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Moods Of The Common Man (Music Download) This is beautiful!!! Great talent.I wish you the best on your career. ******************************************************************** With overlapping hypnotic rhythms and melodies, "Moods of the Common Man" guides you thru the bottomless lows of the abyss as intricate highs decorate and light up the skies. Put on your headphones, lay back and lose yourself so that you may be found, observe the observer till the observer can no longer be observed. "Moods of the Common Man" melts down the complicated facets of mundane understanding while freeing the spirit to soar through the many layers of masked illusion. Trip the trip and don't sweat the curves. The illusionary Rolling Stores Magazine raves, "compositions like Beethoven with a bong". Newsweak proclaims "a Copelanesque Dark Side of the Moon". "Moods of the Common Man" is a collection of depth expanding musical journeys that'll blow your mind like psychic steam from an alchemist dream.
