简介

Formed in 2012, Sydney’s Cull have spent the past three years blushing at the praise they’ve received locally and internationally from peers, fans and critics. Now, it’s time to follow up an EP and a string of singles with their debut full-length LP, Aloft. Cull started with loss - in 2012, frontman Chumpy Ly’s grandmother passed, taking from him a best friend and a mentor who motivated him to pursue his music. Chumpy started Cull as a means of managing his grief- a literal way to cull ill feelings and begin to heal. The music began to take shape and needed to be adapted to a live setting. Chumpy assembled a rock team - first Alex (guitar), then Julian (drums) and Tim (bass). 2013 came, and Cull released Bà nội, their debut EP and tribute to Chumpy’s late grandmother, featuring “World Inside Your Head” and “The Sacred Burial Urn”. The EP and it’s tracks received incredible local and global acclaim, finishing in the top 10 of Mess+Noise’s Best Tracks of 2013, and featuring as one of FBI Radio’s Most Played Tracks of 2013. Chumpy continued to write while Cull toured Australia in 2014 and a second body of work began to accumulate. Two singles, “Nasty Drought” and “Magi Fuel”, teased a new direction, with Indie Shuffle calling them, “Heavier and much more fantastical in their creation… [with] a scope to them unlike most psych/shoegaze bands”. Cull then announced an album for 2015 and released “Truth Bomb”, which Nat Tencic (triple j) dubbed, “a crazy journey you can take me on any time.” The twilight of 2015 brings brand new material from Cull. Aloft is an album inspired by the sensible bits of shoegaze and dreampop, but also linked closely to Cull’s great love of muzak, crushing noise and pedalboard expansion. Written and recorded in Sydney by Chumpy in a studio he built under an Ikea loft bed, Aloft rings with experimentation and unexpected influences - while keeping the guts of Cull intact. Aloft says farewell to Chumpy’s bà nội (Vietnamese for paternal grandmother), and explores what happened after his grief. Chumpy spent a fairly loopy period of time in isolation writing, recording and developing a deep and almost human relationship with the studio under his loft bed. In time the loft bed became his best friend and main form of emotional support. To him, time under the loft bed provided what his grandmother did in her time with him - the motivation to pursue his music.
