Despite what one reviewer here might have you believe, Damon Albarn, co-creator of Gorillaz and singer of Blur, is not anti-American. He disliked it for a while, sure, because Blur had bad experiences in the early years with their record company. And those "quaint songs about men chasing women" and such are meant as satire of English stereotypes, not glorifying of them. Well, I'm off point here. That was then, this is now...and after six albums from the terrific Blur and only one US hit (that fact makes me very sad indeed...) Damon's finally hit the big time with this project. This is a very diverse record, fairly rambling at times but with some great tunes. There's something here for just about anyone...if you were attracted by the funky groove of "clint eastwood" you may well like 5/4, Tomorrow Comes Today or 19-2000. If hip-hop or rap is your thing...say, the rap is your favourite part of CE, Rock the House is for you. There's pretty, blissed out slow songs like Slow Country (a personal favourite, if only for the way Damon sings "whatchoo doin'?") and more driving rockers (M1A1, Punk) that recall some of Blur's earlier, punky material. A few weak moments keep this from getting a five, but overall an intriguing listen. And if you're like me and aren't fond of profanity, this edited version is a good choice...not much is removed, since there only appear to be two songs with any cursing.
