Beyond the Horizon - Volume 3 continues the series dedicated to highlighting new repertoire for the euphonium. Ranging from the slightly jazzy and funky Pearls 2 by Roland Szentpali to the jovial and colorful Harlequin by Philip Sparke, this album demonstrates the wide scope of possibilities with the euphonium. Many new compositions and premieres are featured including the Sonata for Euphonium by Eric Ewazen that features his "Americana" sound with light-hearted wit along with the very picturesque Wilhelm composition, Die Kraft des Mondes (The Power of the Moon). Finally we have the newest work by Scottish composer Bruce Fraser that opens with a lovely melody and followed by a fun double tonguing section. For the finale, we feature the MTSU Wind Ensemble, conducted by Reed Thomas, with the tour-de-force by LA film composer, Kevin Kaska. His Concertino for Euphonium and Band pushes the limits of the range, power, and majesty for the instrument and will certainly elicit great mental pictures as you listen to the great music.
