A lot has changed since Brent Skoda and Andrew Dwyer began playing together as “Banana Sam and the Strawberry Express” in 2008, but the prolific musical production of Skoda, Dwyer, and the rest of the group’s related projects has remained remarkably consistent. At 15 years old Reggie Bacchus, Andrew Dwyer, Brogan Reilly, Brent Skoda, and Daniel Ita attended the same Cleveland-area high school, intersecting in musical circles ranging from pop punk to jazz. Bacchus’s band, the Shoobies, played funk fusion and virtuosic prog, a kind of Les Claypool and Rush hybrid. Each member at one point or another was involved in Stardusters, a group that performed varied folk jazz and Latin numbers. Other Projects include: Apex, Emerald Silks, Shogun Reilly, Big Sky, and the Kaleidoscopes to name a few, and the sounds and styles were remarkably distinct. The Pixelated EP and Mad As A Hat Single have firm roots in that very fertile eclecticism.

Paper Morning’s signature sound manages to grapple enigmatic, otherworldly psych pop and eternally accessible indie rock with the lyrical and compositional cohesion of an acoustic singer-songwriter. Indeed one moment the band weaves a colorful spider web of obscure synth layers, lyrical meditations on time and technology translated in Autotune, and guitar licks coated in reverb, the next moment they tear that image to shreds with a pulsing rock number harboring faint psych echoes and distant alien noises. To put your finger on any one word or phrase in an attempt to capture the essence of Paper Morning is to miss the point entirely. Dense, heady lyricism, paradoxical themes, and musical madness are the only constants. The band has an ever-expanding sonic palette and an insatiable appetite for sounds simultaneously foreign and familiar. The curiosity that fuels Paper Morning is quite conscious. They are as clueless as anyone about what the future holds.
