Today, the Fort Bend Boys Choir continues this tradition. Founded in 1982 by Artistic Director William R. Adams, the organization began with just 45 members in one choir. Today, the group is the largest independent boychoir in the world with almost 200 choristers divided among five performing ensembles: the Training, Town and Tour Choirs; the alumni choir called Cantabilé; and Music Magic, an introductory program for six and seven year old boys. The organization was created to give boys with special music abilities an opportunity to perform more challenging choral literature from classical selections to folk music. The Choir combines the freshness and enthusiasm of childhood with artistic maturity, something only achieved through dedication and hard work. The Fort Bend Boys Choir has been a prominent presence in the community and has also gained distinction as one of the finest programs of its kind in the nation. The boys have performed before three U.S. Presidents and have collaborated with many named entertainers. They appear with major opera companies and symphony orchestras and perform in numerous cathedrals and concert halls throughout the world including The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Sistine Chapel. The boys are regularly heard in commercial recordings on both the local and national level and were honored with the “Addy” award for television commercial excellence. They also sang at the 1989 inauguration of President George Bush and the opening ceremonies of both the 1986 U.S. Olympic Festival and the 1993 Spoleto Choral Festival. The Tour Choir was chosen as the only choral group in the United States to perform in Washington D.C. for the Lighting of the National Christmas Tree at the 2001 Christmas Pageant of Peace with First Lady Laura Bush and President George W. Bush. A news story about this performance garnered them a nomination for a national news “Emmy” award. The organization has also released nine CD recordings. The boys are in high demand for concert performances, commercials, television specials, weddings and conventions. Recognized by their peers, the Tour Choir has also been selected to perform at TMEA and ACDA conventions. The Tour Choir has taken tours through Texas and twenty other states as well as Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Mexico, Canada, Denmark, Italy and Australia. The choirboys, selected by audition, rehearse twice a week, maintain high academic standards and are actively involved in a variety of community organizations, church work, sports and scouting. In the choir’s history, no boy has ever been turned away for financial reasons. These boys are bound together by their talent and desire to sing. They are challenged and rewarded by excelling at something that engages their hearts as well as their minds. For other children, they are models of purposeful work and high achievement. For adults, they are inspirational reminders of human possibilities.
