简介

This CD has been sold out. It is still digitally available. A recording of Georg's current program at Jenolan Caves is planned for 2009. (You might enjoy Georg's CD "Cello Favorites", joined by pianist Gavin Tipping.) The score of 'Poor Maiden' and 'Nana' from this recording are available as free downloads from the web page "sheetmusic" on the linked website: www.georgcello.com. Georg Mertens published recently a systematic analysis of bow technique (this thesis can also be viewed at the linked website). From this site you can watch film clips (Youtube) of his current spectacular underground performances. This recording represents the program of Georg Mertens' concerts at Jenolan Caves from 1998-2000. Opening with Bach's Prelude in G, this CD is the introduction to a wonderful sounding cello, expressed in Bach, Rachmaninov, de Falla's "Nana", ending with the hauntingly beautiful medieval "Poor maiden Me". The setting of the recording is the Cathedral Chamber (Jenolan Caves), reputedly the place with the purest acoustics in the world. After having performed regularly the above compositions, cellist Georg Mertens started to compose music written for this venue. For this recording he selected two compositions, the popular "Jenolan Ciaconna" and "Fantasy on Cathedral Cave". Biography: Georg Mertens, born in Aachen, Germany, studied at the reputed Musikhochschule Freiburg. He received a scholarship to a masterclass with Enrico Mainardi, and later did also masterclasses with Janos Starker. His concerts tours included Paris, Geneva, Zurich, Berlin, Cologne, Brussels, tours of France, Sweden, several tours of Germany & Australia. He recorded in 1993 the complete 6 Suites for cello solo by J.S.Bach, followed by recordings of the Solo suites by Benjamin Britten and Brahms Sonata e min. He performed Schubert's Sonata for Arpeggione to the 20 year celebration of 2 MBS FM. His series of recitals at Jenolan Caves is the longest series of cello recitals in musical history on the planet (more than 130 monthly recitals over more than 11 years).
