Little Sun Flower (Freddy Hubbard) Below is the statement that Dr. Carruthers made on behalf of Summer Manna. Summer Manna invokes the hopeful and determined gathering of the many at the August 28, 1963 March on Washington for Justice and Jobs. Through the ages, the power of music summons, surrounds and sustains the Spirit of a people. With this album, the creative genius of Tony Carpenter comes forth from the deep ancestral memories of African people all over the world. Summer Manna is a call for another Divine feasting for this present generation. Reinterpreting the sounds of the civil rights movement for this present age, Tony Carpenter gives us a fresh anointing of power to keep love, hope and unity alive. - Dr. Iva E. Carruthers A late summer sunny afternoon on the lakefront in Chicago at the North Avenue chess pavilion and my phone rings. "Hey Dave the Freeman it’s TC.” Tony Carpenter, one of Chicago's master hand percussion players and someone I have booked over the years asks me to come out and record his gig tomorrow. I asked “who is on it and where?” “The Midway at the University of Chicago on the hockey rink with Malcolm Banks on drums, Chuck Webb on bass, Mike Logan- keys, James Perkins- sax, Keith Henderson on guitar, Dill Costa- vocals and Tony's percussion crew. “Damn! The A Team, I'm in!” I show up with my live to stereo recording rig, which includes a Manley mixer with a stereo tube out stage and my Apogee Trak 2 A-D converter with the digital info stored on an Alesis Masterlink. Microphones by Neumann, AKG, Sennheiser, Shure etc. I don't know where to set up until Tony and the band arrive. I wind up getting the power from a light pole (not good) and the band deploys like a Delta Force outfit, fast and ready! The weather is threating to rain, warm and windy, and I soon see the electricity is shooting noise pulses into my recording gear as well as noise from the wind gusts. The band starts and I'm still setting up but eventually I get my mix up and the band gets down. Music made by the masters of contemporary jazz and beautiful Brazilian vocals from Dill Costa. These guys are so good that the music is on fire and magical. The first 5 songs are from the most recent August 2013 concert and include some smoking percussion from Tony and the TKOU Perc Ensemble. Cut 6 is a percussion masterpiece, from the first all-star percussion jam I booked, recorded to stereo DAT, and did sound for at Green Dolphin Street in the late 90's. It's called Listen Up Listen Up. The final four songs came from the legendary concert I produced at Main Stage in Chicago, 2010, and was recorded to high resolution Pro Tools and mixed by the great recording engineer Freddy Breitberg. This is a long overdue debut by TOCA- percussion master Tony Carpenter. Listen up listen up, turn it up, and enjoy. This just the beginning of the long overdue recording chapter of TOCA- Tony Carpenter. So here's our interpretation...enjoy! To God be the glory, I’ll praise him forever! He’s worthy of all praises. Lord I lift your name high! I am humbled and honored to be able to share my musical gifts with such talented and gifted fellow musicians. Malcom Banks my brother we have locked rhythms for many years and I am looking forward to finally putting our ideas down and sharing them with the world. Keith Henderson, Michael Logan James Perkins and Audley Reid- Wow! What a band! These guys are the masters of melodies and with Frank Russell and Chuck Webb- the bottom is solid. My drum ensemble TKOU has been playing these rhythms for years and years, and to hear them with this unit is a priceless treasure. Not to mention their wisdom… seasoned masters- such an honor! And to Dill Costa, my Brazilian sister: thank you for gracing this project with such elegance and style. You added just the right sound to expand my vision. Special thanks to my wife, Kim, and family for all the spiritual words, advice, and patience. Thank you Deborah Grant for your spiritual insight and the hearing of “manna” which led me to the title of this album “Summer Manna.” I have so many friends to thank- your support has been phenomenal- you know who you are! Looking forward to seeing you at live engagements as TOCA (live) begins its journey. This project is a collective effort. - Tony Carpenter (TOCA)
