'Play Me A Love Song' is set in a bar in Cologne, Germany that Paul & Karen visited a couple of years ago. The early part of the song attempts to capture the atmosphere of the bar but then, quite unexpectedly, evolves into a tragic love story. 'Lift This Weight' is a portrayal of Stoke on Trent as Paul remembers it in his youth. The chorus of the song is based on one by an unknown writer that Paul encountered in the late 1970s. Unable to trace him, Paul has re-written the song but retained the core element of the chorus.
