“On the surface, ‘Unhinged’ is about removing the front board of the upright piano, which is held by its wooden hinges, to place the microphones closer to the hammers and the strings. This intimate recording brings the listener closer to the music, which explores and showcases reductionist pianism. However, first and foremost, ‘Unhinged’ is about myself, slightly disconnected from this world. This deliberate act of removal from my daily routine allows me to get closer to the inner state of being and to hear the music within myself.”— Mike Lazarev
