That’s why when Phillip “Doc” Martin pulls it off with such ease and skill it’s awe inspiring. For him, it’s just another “Good Day At Work”, which is why his latest CD is so appropriately titled. The release of his fourth studio album proves that Phillip “Doc” Martin is no flash in the pan. Boasting a strong resume of chart successes from his previous CDs; “Doc Martin” is a rising star who’s powerful, heartfelt melodies are wooing live audiences on stages in the US and internationally. And if Martin has his way, music fans all of world over will soon find themselves enjoying a “good day at work” thanks to the intoxicating sounds of his alto saxophone! “Good Day At Work”, features 10 new songs that just don’t passively fit the traditional smooth, instrumental or funky rhythm genres. His tunes flex, bounce and bend offering audiophiles a “new sax” diagnosis. Martin plays his horn with a warm and clear tone supplemented by a amazing range that takes you on a soulful and energetic journey with the likes of classical soul crooners like Donny Hathaway, Gerald Levert and James Brown. His unique sound has drawn the praise of Jazz superstars George Benson, Kim Waters, and Jeff Lorber, who has proclaimed that “Doc Martin’s music captures the energy of a live club recording…” Born in Indiana of Jamaican parents, Martin grew up in South Florida and first began playing music in the Broward County public school band program. By 14, Phillip’s mastery of the intricacies of his horn, as well as his fiery performance style was already evident. He became a leading soloist at South Plantation High School Jazz Band and was honored as a first chair selection to Florida’s All State Jazz Band. He went on to study at the University of Central Florida where he was soon invited to play as a sideman with Grammy Award winner Sam Rivers, Grammy nominee Kirk Whalum, Sunnie Paxton, Wes Hamrick, Davonda Simmonds and Susaundra Lewis and the Sounds of Soul. As Phillip continued to hone his skills he became more influenced by noted saxophone players like Charlie Parker, Everette Harp, Grover Washington Jr., Dave Koz and Gerald Albright. In 2003, he recorded his first CD, “Saxappeal”, with rising music producer and keyboardist Tony Hemmings. The CD introduced Phillip to the world, with several of its tracks becoming popular on Internet radio, including The Weather Channel . After graduation, Martin moved to Washington, D.C., where he graduated from the Howard University College of Dentistry. He is currently a Board Certified Dentist working in the Washington, DC area. Doc Martin has performed in festivals and venues across the U.S. and Caribbean including the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, Catalina Jazz Festival, Bahamas Jazz Festival, Washington, Blues Alley, Philadelphia’s Dell East, Los Angeles’ Spaghettini’s, The Carolina Music Festival and the Trenton Jazz Festival.
