Stone Pillows was a poem written by one of my clients, Billy Pitts, when I worked as a Case Manager at COTS, The Committee on Temporary Shelter.. He wrote the poem about his experience being homeless his entire life. I worked with Billy for four years as his Case Manager. He lived on the streets almost all of his life and when I met him he had severe substance abuse and health issues. He had cirrhosis of the liver and was told that if he drank again he could die. I helped Billy get into mental health counseling, substance abuse therapy, helped get him off the streets and into the shelter. Over the course of four years Billy transformed into a very well liked and well known member of the Burlington community. He was housed in a transitional housing program for a year, learned to budget and save money from his social security check, and started a community service program with the city of Burlington in which he organized music for the Burlington Farmer's Market. He would go to City Hall every week to get the necessary permits, find the musicians and line up the music for the Farmer's Market. Billy and I had a great relationship. We connected through our mutual love of music. In the end Billy had "permanent housing" with a room at the Wilson and was next in line for his own apartment at Decker Towers when unfortunately he slipped up and began drinking again. Only after a few days of a drinking bender, Billy was found dead in his room. His death came as a shock to me and many of us in the community. He was loved by many. I organized his memorial service in which about 100+ people came out, including service providers from different agencies and even then-mayor, Bob Kiss and others from City Hall. He definitely was a one-of-a-kind. Only a few weeks before this happened he gave me this poem he wrote, Stone Pillows and he asked me to turn it into a song. It took me 8 years, but I finally recorded it. In honor of Billy, I will be donating the online sales of Stone Pillows to COTS.
