简介
What happens when the grittiness of American Old Time fiddle music meets the ethereal sounds of the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle? In the fourteen tunes on this record (all originals but one), Brittany Haas (Crooked Still) and Dan Trueman (QQQ, Trollstilt) find out. Sometimes the simple act of trying to make music together can get complicated. Quickly. To begin with, the Hardanger fiddle is tuned higher than the "normal" fiddle, making it impossible to simply play the same tunes together in unison; so what to do? Furthermore, much of Old Time and Hardanger fiddle music is double-stop music—two notes at a time in both instruments, quadrupling the challenge. In these tunes, Britt and Dan tuned their fiddles up in strange but complementary ways and came up with "duo-tunes"—tunes that are complete when the separate "melodies" of the two instruments come together to make something new. Joining Britt and Dan on this record in a series of energetic and inventive arrangements are cellist Natalie Haas (Alasdair Fraser, Mark O’Connor), guitarist Jordan Tice, and bassist Corey DiMario (Crooked Still), all produced by Lawson White (Gil Scott-Heron, Sarah Snider, So Percussion, Alarm Will Sound). In the end, this isn't "cross-over" music, in spite of the initial premise; this is simply what happens when two radically different but adventurous musicians come together to see what they can do, no holds barred, and ask their friends to join in. All tunes by Brittany Haas and Dan Trueman (except track 6, which is a good old tune)
