Left to his own devices on The Thieves of Kailua, he has fashioned a sort of surf-pop opus full of Hawaiian resonance and with heavy nods to the sugarcoated harmonies and rich melodic layers of the Beach Boys. The title track is a veritable epic of the form: a blissful, sweeping song, packed with vocal harmonies and unexpected little shifts. Elsewhere, Holstrom (from his Seattle bedroom) constructs more directly Hawaiian-leaning fare, such as "Return of the Tourist!" and "On the Waikiki." Using surprising instrumentation, field recordings, and lo-fi ingenuity, Holstrom has crafted a lush pocket epic of tropical pop. This is not a cheeky nod to forms of the past, but a meticulously layered and well-composed batch of top-notch, sun-soaked compositions.
