Beyond the Night’s Veil was originally composed and produced for the Tirgan Festival, a major Iranian gathering in Canada. With the main theme of this festival being the gallantry and courage shown by “Arash-e-kamangir”, an ancient Iranian mythical figure, Chahargah was chosen as the most appropriate Dastgah, or musical mode. The manner by which this mode is played, in particular the contrast of the intervals between the notes in the Chahargah scale, create an ambiance of excitement and strength, an ideal musical illustration of the heroic and epic nature of this tale. Following the composition and arrangement of the repertoires, Vesal Ensemble commenced rehearsals with its most recent panel of musicians in Toronto. Although Sarang was unable to make it for the Canadian performance, in January 2012 she performed as the lead vocalist in a concert in Copenhagen, Denmark, where the same program was performed with minor modifications and the addition of a Kurdish section. The present compilation has been exclusively produced and recorded outside of Iran, and it is our honour to be granted the opportunity to present it internationally. We sincerely hope that this album receives the approval of its audience and all those who enjoy the art of music.
