简介
"The Darkness of Night" is the first in a pair of "twin" EP's, containing 7 tracks in anticipation of another 7 upcoming in "The Light of Day". Established by the first and title track, the album's sound is a fast-paced layering of vocal hooks and layered synth arpeggios, backed by vintage drum machine samples. The record's subject matter is by far more personal, vulnerable, and moody than Ming & Ping's previous, self-titled 2009 release and more in line with the tone of the 2007 release "Causeway Army". Highlight tracks include the heavy synth ballad "City of Angels", the brooding yet melodic "Last Night's Lights" and "Chinatown" which features guest vocals by Mariqueen Maandig Reznor (How To Destroy Angels, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Soundtrack). As they often do, Ming & Ping combine upbeat with melancholy in the track "Someone Else", a dreamlike allusion to a relationship damaged with its painful refrain "I'll return as someone else, just like you never knew me at all, the words that hurt, the feelings felt will all dissolve when winter melts". In this track and most others on the EP, the listener can't help but wonder if the identical twins, inseparable since their birth in Hong Kong are crooning about their own strained relationship with each other. Perhaps we'll find out in the material from the second twin EP "The Light of Day".
