On Pat Dailey’s South Bass Island home in the Erie islands of Ohio, Langram Road connects the island’s sleepy southern shore with the wild party-town of Put-in-Bay. Dailey’s raucous live shows at Put-in-Bay’s clubs are the stuff of legend around here, but there’s another side of the singer’s life that’s just a short ride down Langram. Like it’s namesake, Dailey’s new CD Langram Road bridges the energy and humor of the entertainer’s live shows with a more laid-back, reflective and personal vision. Co-produced by longtime friend Tim Mathews and Grammy-nominated composer/producer Tim Story, Langram Road is a richly varied, atmospheric album that effortlessly spans, and defies, the genres of rock, folk, pop and jazz. Four years in the making, Langram Road is “as close to a definitive statement as you might ever get from me,” says Dailey with a grin. Producer Story adds: “Sometimes lost in the loud clubs and concert halls where he usually gigs, is the fact that Pat has an amazingly evocative voice. Tim [Mathews] and I tried to capture the many facets of that voice, and the guy behind it — from wise to wicked, boisterous to introspective.” To bring Langram Road to life, Story, Mathews and Dailey collected an eclectic cast of stellar collaborators. From legendary Ohio jazz trio the Murphys, to Martha Reikow’s liquid cello — from the ragged-edged rock guitars of Pat’s sons Reese and Tom, to Story’s singular sound design, the feel of Langram Road is organic, engaging, impossible to pin down. And Dailey’s personality permeates the album’s 13 songs with easy warmth and a biting wit. Whether it’s the gruff swagger of “Everybody Loves Me”, the sly self-deprecation of “Age Like Wine” or the haunting resignation of “Flight 121”, Dailey deftly pulls the diverse elements of Langram Road into a seamless, engagingly personal whole. Fresh, fun, and marvelously unique among his recordings, Langram Road is certain to thrill Pat’s many fans, and make a few new friends as well.
