简介

This album was recorded all in one day at Greenhouse studios in Vancouver. I did it all in three takes, in the first take I recorded the classical guitar and vocal tracks simultaneously. In take two I added the djembe drum, and in the third take I magically improvised all of the piano parts! I have not played piano seriously for many years, so the addition of it felt really cool, and very spontaneous. The studio had this really old piano laying around, Jordan Leganchuk the albums studio engineer told me it was about 100 years old. It was an absolute pleasure to play and improvise on, the way that piano would ring out was amazing, and Jordan was able to capture all of it! All of the songs on this album except the piano interludes were written just before I took yoga teachers training, during it, or in the week to follow. Unfinished spaces was written during the training, one day after the final lecture of that day I decided to stick around and write some music, there were forest fires burning in Kelowna at the time, the sun was setting, and my friends Stasia and Amy were a few feet away practicing teaching on each other. Each verse delves a bit deeper into our experience at the training, the chorus is really just about how I felt about missing my home back in Manitoba. Day 36 was written 6 days after the teachers training when I was really starting to miss my new found friends. I am still amazed that you can really make 59 life long friends in only 30 days, wow. My mirror, is a song that I don't really feel like explaining too too much, it's about my personal meditation practice, a place I go in my mind. Salma, Chip, Stasia, and Sam are only four of the yoga trainees, but their stories sank deep within me, I needed to write about them. Each verse in this song follows one of these beauties! Some Years is a autobiographical song I was inspired to write after a yoga class with my mom one day in Winnipeg. The song follows many years of my life, from my childhood to my trip to Southeast Asia and back. Transformational Spaces is a song I wrote a few month after finding yoga. I was so amazed at the healing power it had on my body and mind. I was becoming so much happier. I was fully experiencing my life. My first teacher, Jason Graetz, once told me that "everything is already okay", this has become a mantra of mine and I have shared it in this song. Each of the short songs on piano are titled the way they are for a reason. I believe it is through space that you will find you body awareness, your breath awareness and your minds focus. Space provides room for this self discovery to take place. Finding you body, breath, and mind leads to an inner peace. When you are in peace you are able to see the truth clearer than before. This leads to growth and progress towards the true self. I hope you enjoy this album, I have put my heart and soul into it. Much love and peace, Matthew. credits released November 1, 2014 All tracks written and performed by Matthew Carter Ward. Studio engineering by Jordan Leganchuk at Greenhouse Studios.
