The Karl Marx play by Rochelle Owens (Futz, Beclch, the String Game, Homo) and Galt MacDermot (HAIR, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Via Galactica, Human Comedy), directed by Mel Shapiro (Two Gentlemen of Verona, House of Blue Leaves, Stop the World I Want to Get Off/Revival) was presented on March 16, 1973 by Wynn Handman and the American Place Theater in New York as part of their 10th season. The production, with some new cast members, then toured Europe, playing at the Renaissance Theatre as part of the West Berlin Theatre Festival, the Mickery Theatre in Amsterdam and the Espace Pierre Cardin in Paris.

The voices on this album are the members of both the New York and touring productions; child prodigy Ralph Carter of the original cast; Phyllis Newman, Harold Gould and Jaime Sanchez of the European tour company; and Norman Matlock, Linda Mulrean, Louie Piday and Linda Swenson who performed in both casts.
