Wayfarer’s Journey consists of twenty-one selections of new classically-inspired piano and instrumental solos. There are twelve different compositions, nine of them have two versions as both a piano solo and an instrumental solo. All songs are composed, as well as arranged by Deborah Johnson. One of the main reasons Deborah produced this album was to provide new contemporary songs and sheet music for intermediate players. All the songs have a strong melodic structure and line, as most classical compositions do. Her tag line for the album is: “Play it again: you used to play piano…then you lived life. Play it again.” She also arranged nine of the songs for instrumental solo, perfect for special events as weddings and other occasions. For this reason, Deborah provided an additional full album with instrumental background tracks, as it gives an instrumentalist greater options for performance. Deborah began studying piano at the age of 9, focusing mainly on improvisation and the chords. She did not start her formal classical training until reaching her high school years, studying under Joanna Hodges, first U.S. woman concert pianist to perform in Communist Russia. She quickly fell in love with the classics, even as Joanna strictly insisted she play only the notes written on the page and not all of the other notes she heard in her head! The discipline of her classical training paid off, heard in her technique, but also the expansion of her ear paid off in her arrangements and writing. As Deborah is able to hear a melody and harmony and play it by ear, she has become a prolific composer, licensing her songs for film and other uses. She is also a strong vocalist, not only as a soloist, but as an arranger and composer for choral music, adding ambient vocals to Wayfarer’s Journey. Deborah has provided all the chords in the sheet music for each arrangement for additional accompaniment, if desired. There are several different versions of the sheet music, including full scores, depending on what is desired. Playing violin is Deborah’s sister, Sandy Mackinga. Deborah grew up learning not only her own piano repertoire, but also learning the accompaniment for many of the great violin compositions, as her sisters accompanist. It was a pleasure to include Sandy playing on this album, capturing Sandy’s skilled technique and expressive playing. Playing flute is the great Fred Seldon. Deborah wanted to use ethnic wood flutes on the selection “Times Five.” Fred ended up using four different wooden flutes from India for the different registers of the songs, half-holing many of the notes to create the correct pitch. Fred also played several other flutes in the session, as each song dictated. Michael Ferenci played acoustic guitar on several songs, keeping with the mostly acoustic tone of the album. He also played bass on “Homecoming.” Michael writes prolifically and has produced music for a number of music libraries for years. Deborah loves working with him as he has perfect pitch.
