REVIEW BY NOT LAME 2010 This 2010 release follows up last year`s "Songs From The Devil`s Typist". Like that album, Spygenius come from a committed creative space few artists have the disposition, balls and gumption to explore. Like their debut, "Red Lounge" is a highly evolved, carefully crafted, unusual in its approach as it`s not concerned with any `big payoff` or immediate return. It politely demands the listener to suspend expectation of everyday melodies, common arrangements and song writing approach. It`s hypnotic, intoxicating and wonderfully disconnected trying to aim for easy pleasures... Spygenius locates all kinds of influences from the early 70s singer songwriter fare, late 70s power pop, progressive rock explorations and early 90s modern AOR pop. You`ll hear lots of Squeeze, Martin Newell, The Bevis Frond and late-era XTC, but while Spygenius use these artists has passing reference markers, always veering into their own unique vision. And it`s that, that makes this album one that has to be listened to beginning to end, one that asks, politely, to invest yourself in its modest but moving indulgence. Very Highly Recommended! REVIEW by GIG GUIDE 2010 "There are certain bands who when asked what music genre they fit into will say Rock, Pop, R&B etc. Then there is Spygenius, a band who refuse this need to be pigeonholed under a certain catagory and rather take several, put them into a giant musical blender and the results are fantastic to hear. First track, 'Digden's Rise' is a perfect example of this and probably my favourite song on the album. "It's not all musical madness, I was very fond of the lovely harmonies on 'This Morning After' and 'First do no Harm', showing a softer side to Peter Watts song craft and writing. It's great to hear a band with so much invention willing to throw away the rulebooks of verse, bridge, chorus and two guitars, bass and drums by just going nuts! More please!"
